Vijay Sethupathi sets a new trend in K'town

The audio of Alaiye Alaiye, which features Ranjith of Manada Mayilada fame and Ankitha Nayana in lead roles, was recently launched amidst several celebrities attend-ing it. The first set of audio was unveiled by Kayar and was received by actor Vijay Sethupathi and composer Imman. Speaking at the function, Kayar said, "Vijay Sethupathi is a true artiste among the contemporary actors of Tamil cinema. His natural talent makes him one of my favourite actors to watch. Nowadays, actors are not attending pro-grammes that are meant to promote their films; major actors even refuse to come to the audio launches of their own films. In such an environment, Vijay Sethupathi obliging to grace us with his presence for events that don't have to do anything with his film has to be commended. His selfless action that helps and promotes other's films has to be recognised and celebrated. Other actors should take a page from his actions and emulate him." He added, "Another actor who selflessly promotes other's films would be Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan who treats all
movies — be it big bud-get ones or smaller - - productions, with equality. His actions prove to be a big boon for upcoming films. Actor Suriya is another name that comes to mind, who indulges in such works." Directed by debutane G. Manikandakumar, Ala lye Alaiye is pro-duced by AR Murugan and Jaw a har Pazhanizppan.

THE TAMIL FILM INDUSTRY IS HEADING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

Having completed a major shooting schedule of her upcoming Tamil film Anjaan, actress Samantha appears to have returned awestruck by all things Tamil, starting from her co-star, Suriya. “All of us have heard about his professionalism and that he’s a gentleman, but after working with him, I realized he’s much more than that. Everything, from the humility with which he carries himself on the set and how he performs in front of the camera, seem like a benchmark for me,” she confesses.
Despite not being the centre of the film, she is confident that her character will “make a big impression even if the screen time is less.” However, she is unwilling to share more details about her role saying, “Like characters in most Lingusamy’s films, my characterization is quite spunky and full of life.”
Last year, Sam caused a flutter by stating she wanted to take a break from Telugu films to concentrate on her Tamil projects. The move seems to be paying off. “I love the direction in which Tamil cinema is heading these days. Recently, when I saw Goli Soda, I couldn’t stop raving about it for a long time. I really like the fact that all sorts of films have their own space in Tamil. The offers that I got in Tamil were too tempting to let go. I’m in a happy space right now,” she says.
So, is she putting an end to doing commercial films? “Not really. Most of my films in Telugu this year are big action entertainers. I’m eagerly looking forward to Manam. I’ve never worked so hard on my character. I think all of us (ANR, Nagarjuna and Naga Chaitanya) surprised ourselves while acting in the film. It’ll make you smile in the end,” she signs off.

Director Kannan hires a train for his next

Atrain plays a major role in Kannan’s Oru Oorla Rendu Raja. So much so that the director has hired a platform in the Mayavaram railway station along with a train for 10 days for the first schedule.
Kannan says, “This train is almost like a character in the film. We will be shooting an important sequence, sort of a flashback, in a station. So, we sought permission from the authorities almost two months ago to shoot at the Mayavaram railway station. We will be shooting from March 6 to 16 there.”
The film, which stars Vemal, Priya Anand and Soori, will go on floors today. “We have erected a station set with trains in the city as well,” he adds.

Mohanlal and Lakshmi in ishqiya remake

After the astounding success of Jilla, vet-eran actor Mohanlal has reportedly been flooded with offers from K'town. The latest on the grapevine is, that the actor will be reprising Naseeruddin Shah's role in the Tamil remake of the 2010 Hindi hit Ishqiya. The Bollywood cult film also starred Vidya Balan and Arshad Warsi in lead roles. Rumour has it that Arya will likely be roped in to play Arshad Warsi's character The producers are likely to cast the southern beauty Lakshmi Rai in the female lead. When the popular actress was contacted, she revealed, "It's too early to comment. But having said that, I 'have' been approached for the Ishqiya remake. We've just had a tele-phonic conversation and we're yet to sit down and discuss the script in detail. Nothing has been finalised as yet. But yes, if all goes well I'd love to do the role as the original had a very strong female lead
character" Sources reveal that, the film will be re-oriented a lit-tle to suit local sensibilities and will be apparently dubbed in Malayalam. Watch this space for further developments.

Once is not enough

Second outing is a crucial thing for any debut filmmaker who has given a block-buster hit. S.R. Prabhakaran's maiden ven-ture Sundarapandiyan was a smash hit. This time round, he has joined hands with one-film-old Udhayanidhi Stalin who is also in a position to establish his credentials that his debut Oru Kal Oru Kannada was not a flash in the pan. Kadhirvelan (Udhayanidhi), an ardent Anjaneya devotee, travels from Madurai to Kovai to set things right in his sister's (Chaya Singh's) life. There he falls for Pavithra (Nayanthara), his sister's neighbour. It was love at first sight for Kadhir and he fore-goes his bachelorhood and follows Pavithra who works in a TV showroom. However, she tells Kadhir not to pursue her as she has a soft spot for Goutham (Sundar Ramu) who is her long-time friend. When Kadhir realises Goutham's real intention of merely having a good time with Pavithra and drop her after he achieves it, he decides to stay back to win Pavithra's heart. But he has several hurdles to cross to attain his goal. His brother-in-law (Bharath Reddy) is at constant logger-heads with Pavithra's father (Jayaprakash). Also Kadhir's father (Naren) is dead against love marriages and for this very reason, he disowns his daughter when she marries a boy of her choice. How our simple hero overcomes his problems with the help of his loyal 'friend in need is a friend indeed' essayed by Santhanam forms the rest of the story. Udhayanidhi has improved a lot in his acting and dancing abilities from his debut venture. His success mainly lies in the fact that he chooses uncomplicated scripts that
would go well with his demeanor, and keeps 'Comedy King' Santhanam as his company throughout the screen space. So, here in IRK also, he makes no mistakes and it works to a large extent. Santhanam is the scene-stealer and is the strong pillar of the movie, although some of his humour is repetitive. Despite her de-glam role, Mayan appeals and does a neat job. Saranya is as usual a doting mother; Naren, Bharath Reddy and Chaya Singh do what was expected of them. There's hardly any-thing by way of story. The sub-plots are plain and there are no surprising twists. With an ordinary screenplay, one wonders if it was the same director who gave us the notable film Sundarapandiyan. And why would Sundar blurt out his dirty motives towards Mayan to a friend in a crowded coffee shop which makes every head turn? Although Harris Jayaraj's tunes give a feeling of (1011 vu, they are still hummable. Balasubramaniem's visuals are exotic. The movie drags a bit and needs urgent trimming.

A MENTAL RIDE AWAITS

The trailer of the much anticipated Valeba Raja released recently, and it was well worth the wait — as the KLTA team seems to have come up with a laugh riot again! Billed as a `psycho-comedy'... wait, what exactly is a psycho-comedy anyway? "It's because the film has a lot to do with psychology! It's basi-cally the story of a mentally con-fused guy (Sethu) who is in love with two girls (Nushrat and I) — and he is taking advice from an even more mental person! (Santhanam). I'm actually the most sane character in the movie, and as you might have seen in the trailer, I end up slap-ping Sethu a lot throughout the film!" laughs Vishakha Singh, one of the two hero-ines in the movie. And did she enjoy it? "Oh, I had a blast. Sethu and I are good friends, and I totally went all out going phatak on him a number of times! Its been around 6-8 months since Santhanam and I worked together, but we have a great chemistry, and know each other's timings very well. We just picked up from where we left off earlier in KLTA. Our scenes were shot the fastest," she says. In other news, the feisty actress has also picked up a nomination for Best Breakthrough Performance at the Stardust awards for her role in the runaway hit Fukrey. "It was such a pleasant surprise! I don't expect to win, but being recognised by your peers and contemporaries is a great feel-ing indeed. I really feel happy about it," Vishakha concludes. Oh, I had a blast. Sethu and I are good friends, and I totally went all out going phatakon him a number of times!

Vijay Sethupathi to don producer’s hat

Buoyant with the success of ‘Pannaiyarum Padminiyum,’ Vijay Sethupathi is all set to try his hand at production with ‘Orange Mittai’. Shooting is scheduled to start in March, the actor told The Hindu in a telephone interview. This is not really his first tryst with production. He had earlier attempted to produce a different script and had even shot for ten days. But unhappy with the rushes, he decided to scrap his maiden venture. Now he is trying his luck second time over. “I have had the ‘Orange Mittai’ script with me for some time now but no producer was willing to back it. So now I have decided to produce it myself,” the actor, once an outsider and now a firm box office draw, said. The film is set to be directed by award-winning international director Biju Vishwanath. Vijay Sethupathi is happy with the offbeat formula he has discovered. “I see most films are invariably recycling and telling the same stories over and over again. I am just choosing stories that come across as new to me. I am still learning cinema.” The actor, currently, is also part of UTV’s ‘Poramboke’ directed by S.P. Janarthanan, in which he will be sharing the screen with actors Arya and Shaam.
Box-office clash coming up
Two formidable tie-ups have been announced by the Tamil box office’s top-draw stars. How is this for a box-office clash: on one side, actor Vijay, director A.R. Murugadoss and music director Anirudh; and on the other side actor Ajith, director Gautham Menon and music director A.R. Rahman? Samantha will pair Vijay in the A.R. Murugadoss project, which has set expectations soaring, especially after the same combination worked wonders with ‘Thuppakki’. The unit was seen shooting at the airport recently. Gautham Vasudev Menon is expected to start shooting his Ajith Kumar-starrer in March.
TV stars shine
Tamil television talk-show and reality-show hosts are basking in the glory that hitherto only film stars enjoyed. From Sivakarthikeyan, Gopinath, MaKaPa Anand to Jagan, Deepak, Sanjeev, Nirmala Periyasamy and Bhavana, the list of TV stars who are now household names is growing constantly. Divyadharshini Neelakandan (nicknamed ‘DD’) of Vijay TV says she keeps hearing about youngsters aspiring to become TV anchors. “I am glad when mothers say they want their daughters to become anchors after watching my shows. But, I don’t agree when people put me on a par with heroines as their profession is completely different, and demanding,” she said. New TV host and actor-director Lakshmy Ramakrishnan feels the small screen connects her better with her audience. “I didn’t have an idea about the extent of television popularity. When I go out in public now, people treat me like a part of their family. My talk show (Solvadhellam Unmai on Zee Tamil) is team work. Yet, many see me as the face of the show and share their views and problems with me. Of course, much responsibility comes with hosting television shows. You cannot demand retakes in talk shows packed with emotions as in films,” she said.

NEETU’S SPECIAL ACT IN NAGARJUNA’S NEXT

Neetu Chandra recently shot with Nagarjuna for director Vikram Kumar’s Telugu film, Manam (starring late Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Nagarjuna and Naga Chaitanya in the lead, along with Samantha and Shriya). While the actress refuses to talk about her role in the film, she says it was like a big reunion for her.
Neetu says, “I was offered a film with Nagarjuna almost four years ago, but it didn’t materialise. But I’m glad I got to work with him now. He’s sweet and has a great sense of humour. We got along like a house on fire.”
We hear the actress shot at the Mumbai airport for a day. She adds, “Vikram, with whom I worked in Yaavarum Nalam, called me up to say there’s an interesting role in his film and wanted me to listen to it. I told him to just inform me where I have to come to shoot for it. We had a great time working previously, and I was more than happy to work with Vikram again.”
Meanwhile, Neetu says she is in talks for a Tamil film. “It’s a dream project, with a popular actor and a director. But I can’t reveal more on it now,” she signs off.

Yuvan Shankar Raja embraces Islam

Yuvan Shankar Raja took to his micro-blogging page yesterday to announce something very personal. While dismissing rumours about him getting married for the third time, the composer also tweeted that he is now following Islam. “Yes, I follow Islam and I’m proud about it. Alhamdhulillah. My family supports my decision and there is no misunderstanding between me and my dad,” he said.

While we tried to reach Yuvan regarding this, a source close to the music director revealed, “Yuvan was very attached to his mother and soon after she passed away, he started missing her a lot. He also met a spiritual guru, but we cannot say what exactly made him follow Islam,” and maintained that, he was definitely not inspired by fellow composer AR Rahman (who had converted to Islam) in his decision.

Yuvan, the source said, has been practicing Islam for almost a year now. “He has been doing namaz five times a day all these months. He is not missing his prayers even when he is at work and ensures that he allots time for it at his studio as well,” said the source.
The source added that Yuvan is now in the process of converting to Islam. “Currently, he is planning to convert to Islam and is also thinking of going for a change of name. But, he is yet to decide on these. Since it is his personal decision, his family members respect it.”

DIRECTOR'S DIARY

Arun Kumar. the director of the film says. "Vijay Sethupathi has always been casual, friendly, naughty and playful at the shooting spot. But he nonchalantly slips into the character when the camera starts to roll. He believes in building rap-port and bonding with co-artistes on the sets and so. he doesn't rest in his caravan." The film, has been converted to a full length feature from a short film. Arun explains. "Rewriting the script for the feature film took almost a year but making it didn't take too long. The story has been changed in relation to the short. It was not a conscious deci-sion to cast Vijay Sethupathi just because he was roped in by other short filmmakers. From my short film. I have retained Bala, who essayed Vijay's role. He is a phenomenal actor."

Shriya is back with a Bala film

Looks like finally, fans of the svelte beauty Shriya Saran who has been MIA for quite some time is now back in the fold in K'town! And guess who has roped in her to play the leading lady? None other than National Award winner Bala who is known for being choosy about his heroines. If close sources are to be believed, Shriya who was on a long hiatus (with Rowthiram being her last major film in Tamil) will be playing the lead opposite actor/filmmaker Sasikumar in Bala's direction. Bala's leading ladies always have a solid role to perform and we hope Shriya's is no different.  It is a common knowledge that Shriya is an accomplished dancer. Grapevine has it that the film is based on Karagattam, the pop-ular folk dance of Tamil Nadu. Apart from Shriya's dancing skills, we hope that Bala would extract the histrionic talents of the Shaft actress as well. The icing on the cake is that maestro IlaiyaraWa will be compos-ing the music for the film. Interestingly, Ilaiyaraaja has also composed the music in the blockbuster Karagattakaran in the past. Can he repeat the magic? Watch this space for updates!

`No tension between Simbu and Nayan'

pulling off a casting coup of sorts, director Pandiraj's cast ex-flames Simbu and Nayanthara. Naturally, the question on everyone's mind was if there was any tension or ill will between the stars, who had parted on bitter terms. The director however says that both the actors have put their differences aside while shooting for the film. "Nayanthara and STR were very professional. Their screen chem-istry, this time around, is something refresh-ing. Their focus remained primarily on work, and did not let anything else come in the way" Pandiraj also reveals that he has chosen the title Idhu Namma Aalu for the film. Interestingly, this is also the title of a yester-year film, written and acted by Bhagyaraj. "I am currently talking to Bhagyaraj sir among others to obtain the title legally. Everything seems to be going in the positive direction so far. I should be making an official announcement soon. The director says that the theme of the film is a "heart-warming love story but not the usual, run-of-the-mill subject. People will be able to relate to the incidents in the film to their own life." Actor Soon, who is currently in demand after his role in Varuthapadatha Vaalibar Sangam, essays the role of STR's friend in this film. Pandiraj reveals that although Simbu was initially apprehensive about working with Soon, things changed once they began shooting. "Santhanam usually shares screen space with STR, therefore he was apprehesive about the chemistry that he and Soon i would share," says Pandiraj, adding, "However, on the first day of the shoot, Simbu told me that he thoroughly enjoyed working with Soon i and that their combination is surely going to be a laugh riot." There was also specula-tions that Pandiraj will also be roping in Hansika (another one of Simbu's exes) for this flick — which he denies as outright rumours. "It was reported in an online web-sites but it's completely false. It is just going to be Simbu and Nayan."

Vijay and Samantha start shooting in Kolkata

The much-anticipated untitled film of Ilayathalapathy Vijay, where he teams up with A.R.Murugadoss once again after the block-buster hit Thuppakki, went on floors recently at Kolkatta's famous Kalighat Kali Temple on Monday. As written first by this newspa-per that the film has Samantha playing Vijay's romantic interest, the makers have also announced that the Naan Ee actress indeed has been roped in. the story has a Kolkata backdrop which  is evident now, since the shooting has commenced at Kolkata. Buzz is that though Soon, who has worked with Vijay inIla, was initially considered for the come-dy bits, it is Satish of Ethir Neechal fame who has finally been brought on board. Anirudh Ravichander will be composing the music for Vijay's film which he says is quite a challenging task. George C Williams is behind the camera.

V V PRASSANNA Singer

SINGING CAREER
I've been in the industry 10 years — and I am glad I could sustain myself through all these years of entertaining people, singing popular songs. I'm thoroughly enjoying my profession as it's a childhood dream come true for me.
UPCOMING PROJECTS
Adhithi in Tamil and Local in Kannada are confirmed. The response for the Koodamela Koodavechi song from the recently released Rummy has thrilled me. 1-7-.
TRYST WITH CARNATIC MUSIC
I had a penchant for Carnatic music since my childhood and revel in exploring its diversity and singing songs pertaining to it. Though the response is not going to be as instant to it as it Is to filmi music, the delight it provides is unparalleled. I consider rendering Carnatic music as a meditative process.
STINT AS AN ACTOR
It was a sudden decision. Bharathan, the director of Adhithi, asked me to play a meaty role in the movie, which will have Nanda too in it. Bharathan was convinced that I would be able to do it after watching the making of the recording. I think being a dub-. bmg artist will help me pull it off as an actor. Though I'm getting offers to play lead roles, my priority will always be singing.
KNOWING THE LANGUAGE

I firmly believe that a singer has to be adept in the language in which he sings for a flawless output. Luckily, though my roots are in Maharashtra, I was born and brought up in Coimbatore. Also, my proficiency in Sanskrit and Kannada languages are an added advantage.

Cutting-edge camera work in Vikram Prabhu's next

Vikram Prabhu, who was last seen in Ivan Vera Matihiri, has almost completed the shoot for his next film, Sigaram Thodu, which is directed by Gaurav Narayanan. What's interest-ing is that the film, which is produced by UTV Motion Pictures, is now using a cut-ting-edge camera, MoVi m10, to shoot
The climax of the film, Sigaram Thoth', is shot using MoVi m10 as it captures stabilised shots
the climax of the film. It's the first Tamil film to use this equipment, which is com-monly used in Hollywood flicks. Director Gaurav Narayanan says, "Currently,

we are shooting the climax of the film in Chennai, which has to be done in heavy traffic. So we are using this camera to capture stabilised shots. It's more like a hand-held steady camera. The film will get over by the end of next month." Monal Gajjar plays the female lead in the flick, which is said to be an action-packed enter-tainer with fun elements. "The movie revolves around the relationship between a father and a son. It will have a perfect balance of romance, comedy and action," says Gaurav. Vikram Prabhu is also wait-ing for the release of Arima Nambi, which is directed by Anand Shankar. Priya Anand plays the female lead in the film.

Director Bala's stunning harbinger with Ilaiyaraaja

Director Bala is known to portray the dark side of society on screen, and his films have always garnered critical acclaim. His last flick, Paradesi, was adapted from the novel, Red Tea, written by Paul Harris and it did well. Now, Bala is shooting for his next untitled flick, and what's interesting is that actor and director Sasikumar plays the lead in the film. He has also roped in mae-stro Ilaiyaraaja to com-pose for the film. Director Bala has released a small music video for this film online, in which the legendary musi-cian composes, using a live orchestra. Sources close to Bala said, "The video is about the live. orchestration of Ilaiyaraaja that he is using for all 12 songs in the film. The best part is, it's going to be composed in only six days. Also, the singers for all 12 songs are newcomers." The film is jointly produced by Sasikumar and direc-tor Bala's B-studios. Watch this space for more.

KARTHIKA IS A SPEED JUNKIE

Looks like Karthika is enjoying every bit of shooting for SP Jhananathan’s Purampokku. She says, “We shifted from snowy Kullu Manali to the deserts of Jodhpur. The climate change was drastic, but we quickly got comfortable in the setting. In Manali, I shot for a tap dance sequence; walking on snow in itself was difficult! And here, I will be shooting a scene that will require me to drive a high power jeep and perform stunts simultaneously. I’m looking forward to the shoot here.” The actress says she will be one of the boys in the film. “Whatever the guys do, I will also be doing it!” she smiles. Meanwhile, not many know that Karthika is also an artist. “I had taken up art as a subject in my college; it’s very difficult to get your nuances right at the beginning. But I was glad I scored the highest in it, even though I was shooting for my films then. But now, I don’t find much time to paint,” she says.

NIIKHIL MATHEW Singer

INSPIRATION
I don't idolise or take inspiration from any one person alone in life. I admire Hariharan, his voice is divine. His style of singing is unique.
INDEPENDENT ALBUMS
My dream is to do an independent album. It may happen in the next few years and I am working on it. It gives space for singers to use their creativity which doesn't happen when it comes to film songs.
DREAM MUSIC DIRECTOR
Ilawaraaja and Ad( Rahman are the two legends I want to work with. Rahman is a person who , gives variations to every song! each time. I love his style of working.
CHANGE IN MUSIC INDUSTRY
It's irritating when people use auto-tuning in the midst of compositions. The use of abusive lyrics in songs must also be avoided. Songs must be pleasant to listen to.
IF NOT A SINGER?
I wanted to be a playback singer from childhood. So there is no question of what I would have been if not a singer as I really don't know. I decided that singing is my cup of tea at a very young age.
